What is SITI?

Stevens Institute of Technology International (SITI) at Parque Cibernético de Santo Domingo, authorized by the National Council of Higher Education, Science and Technology (CONESCYT), began its first program in the Dominican Republic in September 2007. SITI offers two exciting new Masters Degrees in the Dominican Republic - a Master of Science in Information Systems and a Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Technologies and Project Management - to qualified college graduates.

How is SITI different from other Universities in the Dominican Republic?

SITI offers hands-on, state-of-the-art programs in technology and technology management. These are rigorous, American-style graduate education programs that are taught by world-renowned Stevens faculty members in the Dominican Republic.

Who teaches the courses at SITI?

All courses at SITI are taught by members of the faculty from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA. Stevens faculty travel to the Dominican Republic to deliver the courses face-to-face at SITI.

What education programs are offered at SITI?

SITI currently offers two masters degree programs: a Masters of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) and a Masters of Engineering in Manufacturing Technologies and Project Management (MTPM). [Learn more.]

What are the program requirements for the SITI Masters degrees?

The SITI Masters requires 40 credits. Students take 11 courses for a total of 33 credits and complete a Masters Thesis for an additional 7 credits.

Is a Masters Thesis required?

Yes.

Can a student transfer course credits from another University to SITI?

Generally not. However, some graduate courses taken at some universities that have not been previously applied to another degree may transfer to SITI. The SITI Program Directors decide on transfer credits on a case-by-case basis.

What are the concentrations areas in the MSIS and MTPM programs?

Are the classes taught in English?

Yes. All classes are taught in English (e.g., class lectures, reading material, and the requirement to present and write papers) The requirement for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) exams are waived, but all students must submit a sample of their writing as part of the their application to SITI. The first course in each of the Masters Programs (COMM 500) is a course to improve participants' English writing and presenting skills. We also offer an English language ramp course to help students prepare for the program. Finally, one credit of thesis credit can be earned by completing COMM 510, Masters Thesis Preparation.

Are classes held fact-to-face or via the web?

Both. Classes are delivered in a hybrid format that combines web-based learning and intense face-to-face classes. Each class is conducted over a 4-5 week period:

• Week 1: pre-class preparation; done largely via the web.
• Weeks 2-3: 30 hours (taken over two weekends) of face-to-face classes. The face-to-face classes are held on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• Weeks 4-5: completion of homework and class projects; these assignments are sent to the Professor via the web for grading.

Will SITI be offering the programs at other locations?

Other locations will be considered, including corporate or university sites, depending on the demand.

How long are the class meetings?

Each face-to-face class session runs from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Fridays and from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Class sessions includes refreshment breaks and a break for lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

How many students are in each class?

Classes have between 20 and 30 students. It is important to get your registration material submitted to SITI early because only 30 students meeting admissions criteria will be admitted to the next session for each program.

Does a student need a computer and internet access?

Yes. Some of the course work requires a computer and access to the internet. SITI makes available computers with internet access on a first-come-first-served basis to registered students in the SITI Library at Parque Cibernético.

How long will it take to complete a SITI Masters degree?

The 11 required courses for a SITI degree take about 13 months to complete. The Masters Thesis can take up to an additional 4 month, but that depends very much on the student.

How much work is required for each course?

This varies per student and the respective experience that they bring.  Each course requires preparation (reading material and in some cases some assignments) prior to the face-to-face class.  During classes, assignments are given on some evenings. The students are often required to complete a final project (typically a written paper of 20 pages) over the two weeks after the class. When taking a course where the student has previous experience it would likely require less time.  When taking a course where the student has no previous experience, it will be more demanding.  

What are the Admission Criteria?

Students must complete a SITI Graduate Application and provide Official Transcripts from their undergraduate university (include other university transcripts as appropriate).

 

For the MTPM program students must have a four year bachelor degree with a major in engineering, math or science with a GPA of 3.0 or better. For the MSIS program students may also have a bachelor degree in computer science, information systems, management or technology management.

 

Students must also submit two letters of recommendation, preferably from business executives, and a 500-word essay describing their reasons for pursuing graduate at SITI.

 

Mathematics proficiency (an undergraduate course in calculus and knowledge of statistics) is required for the MTPM program and for the Telecommunications Concentration in the MSIS program.

 

Finally, English language competency must be confirmed by standardized test or be certified by a Stevens representative.

What is the Application Procedure?

Applicants are required to submit a complete application form, preferably on line. An official transcript from each academic institution attended, two (2) letters of recommendation, and a 500-word essay must be submitted to the SITI Registrar. Once SITI receives all of the application material, it should take approximately one week to be reviewed. This will be followed by a letter indicating the admissions status being mailed to the applicants' home.

The first classes at SITI started on September 28, 2007. The second classes started in October 2008.

The next classes at SITI will start on February 2010.

What is the deadline for submitting an application for the next SITI Masters programs?

Given that the program starts in February 2010, all admissions material should be received by SITI no later than November 1, 2009. Applications for scholarships to SEESCyT should be submitted much earlier.

What is the schedule of classes that started in October 2008?

Is the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required?

No, but if you have taken either of these tests, it would be helpful to submit your scores to SITI.

What does a SITI course cost?

The full tuition costs for the SITI programs in US $1,000 per credit. A three-credit course costs US$ 3,000. The total Masters Degree costs US $40,000.

 

However, significant financial aid in the form of scholarships and loans is available for qualified Dominican students.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, significant scholarship support is available for qualifying Dominican students. 4. Your CV or Resume
5. An original copy of your certificate (notarization is not required) (Acta de nacimiento original, no es necesario certificarla)
6. Medical certificate that has been issued within the last 6 months (Certificado medico con menos de 6 meses de expedición)
7. A photocopy of your identity or voter registration card (Copia de cédula)

What are the requirements for a scholarship from SEESCyT?

Once a student receives his or her acceptance letter from SITI, they must present that letter to La Secretaria de Estado Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnologia (SEESCYT) (http://www.seescyt.gov.do) for scholarship funds. SEESCYT covers either 80% (for those students in the workforce) or 90% (for university teachers) of the tuition.

 

SEESCyT also requires:

Whom do can I contact once I am admitted into one of the Programs?

All students will be assigned a faculty advisor. The name and contact information will be included on your letter of admissions.

How do I enroll in courses at SITI?

Each admitted student will receive a student identification number to log into the registration system at http://es.stevens.edu/ahomepg.htm

Username = Student Identification
Password = your birthday in YYMMDD format

 

The registration system will guide you through how to enroll in the required courses.

How do I pay my tuition bill at SITI?

Once a student receives his or her acceptance letter from SITI, they must present that letter to La Secretaria de Estado Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnologia (SEESCYT) for scholarship funds. What is required to complete the Masters Thesis?

Each student must select and receive approval from their Program Director for a topic (and abstract) for their Masters Thesis.  Working students should apply their coursework to their jobs.  Based on the topic, students will be assigned a Thesis Advisor and Reviewer from the Stevens faculty. A typical thesis is at least 50 pages of content.
